There is an urgent need for a comprehensive outreach program in the rural and suburban areas of West Bengal where awareness about autism and related developmental conditions remains critically low. Many children and adults with autism in these regions remain undiagnosed or misdiagnosed due to lack of information, limited access to trained professionals, and social stigma surrounding neurodevelopmental disorders.
Autism Society West Bengal (ASWB) believes that awareness is the key to achieving social inclusion. People with disabilities often face neglect and social isolation; therefore, promoting awareness at various levels, beginning with families, schools and neighbourhoods. This is essential for meaningful inclusion. Over the years, ASWB has designed and organized numerous awareness and outreach programmes aimed at fostering understanding and acceptance within communities.
In 2022, with the support of a philanthropic organization, ASWB could start the Outreach work which expanded our efforts to reach rural and suburban areas around our premises in Mukundapur and in South 24 Parganas, where we conducted orientation, screening, and enrichment programmes. Autism Society West Bengal is continuing its outreach programs since November, 2022. The outreach program aims to bridge this gap through awareness and orientation sessions for parents, teachers, health workers, and community stakeholders, enabling early identification and support. Regular screening camps can help detect children at risk and facilitate their referral to appropriate interventions. In addition, enrichment programs focusing on communication, socialization, and daily living skills will help empower families and local caregivers to create inclusive environments. By extending its expertise beyond the city center, Autism Society West Bengal can build local capacity, foster community participation and ensure that children and adults with autism in marginalized areas receive equitable opportunities for care, education, and meaningful engagement. The Outreach program includes orientation, screening and enrichment sessions with various Government primary schools, ICDS centers and Government departments and offices.
