Autism Society West Bengal (ASWB) is a parent-led non-profit organization that has been working with deep commitment since 2002 to support individuals on the autism spectrum and their families. It began in a small two-room setup with six children and has grown into a full-fledged organization offering a wide range of services. Today, ASWB stands as a trusted and vibrant community of RCI-certified special educators, psychologists, therapists, social educators, parents and well-wishers.
In the early days, there was not enough manpower, resources and most of all awareness. Getting any kind of funds or support was very difficult, mostly because autism is an invisible disability.
Initially, ASWB functioned as a parent support group with group play sessions, small group discussions and workshops. Everything was run by parents, amazing volunteers and supporters who came as angels to help build the organization.
From two rooms, ASWB expanded to three more rooms on the same small lane in Kolkata — all made possible by the kindness of friends and family. As ASWB introduced multiple programs, even that space became insufficient, so another space was rented for early intervention. At one point, ASWB was operating from four different small premises to meet the growing demand.
Today, ASWB runs all its programs under one roof. Many of the little ones who came to us in the early years are now grown up. Some have completed their education and are working, while others have partially completed their education and are involved in vocational units of other organizations.
Some of the proactive parents who were involved in the early years of ASWB now serve on the Governing Body or Advisory Panel, and some have trained to become professionals. Most of the work at ASWB is now carried out by a dedicated team of professionals, parents and our mentor.
